• EurolacTB

    The European-Latin American-Caribbean-Tuberculosis (EurolacTB) Consortium

  • Who We Are

EurolacTB is a consortium of scientists that joins effort

between Europe and Latin America to fight against tuberculosis

    AIM

The EurolacTB Consortium is aimed at promoting and strengthening research collaboration between European and Latin American scientists in the area of

poverty-related and infectious diseases with initial emphasis on tuberculosis.

    OBJECTIVES

    • Promoting and strengthening research collaborations between European and Latin American scientists
    • Contribute to the creation of the European – Latin American Knowledge Area
    • Perform research and conduct studies in the area of poverty-related diseases and infectious diseases with special reference to tuberculosis
    • Promote innovation and technological development in the area of infectious diseases
    • Organize training and dissemination activities in the area of science, technology and innovation.

    ABOUT TUBERCULOSIS

Tuberculosis (TB) is an airborne contagious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The TB bacillus can be transmitted when an infectious person with active disease coughs, sneezes, talks or spits. If left untreated, a person with active TB can infect on average between 10 and 15 other persons per year. Only 10% of those infected will develop active disease. It is estimated that one third of the world’s population is latently infected with M. tuberculosis.

A more effective control of the disease is hampered by the HIV pandemic and the emergence of drug resistance in M. tuberculosis. Current efforts are aimed at developing more effective and rapid diagnostic tools, new anti-tuberculosis drugs capable of shortening the current treatment regimens and a more effective TB vaccine.

  • Projects

Several ongoing TB research projects between Europe and Latin America (Horizon 2020, national and international funding) on:

    -TB diagnosis

    -TB vaccine

    -Drug resistance

    -Immunology

    -Epidemiology

-Next generation molecular diagnostics (WGS, proteomics and tanscriptomics)
